What to Expect5 days of Latosa Escrima with GM Cedric Concon and Andrew Somlyo MD, MI
GM Cedric Concon will be covering the the foundation and history of the Latosa Escrima System, going over the technical material of its basic strategies - the box, figure 8, cinco teros, and pressure- all in light of the of the fundamental principles of Latosa Escrima- balance, power, focus, transition, and timing, distance, and speed. He will teach training these in a variety of contexts- short weapon (single stick), double weapon (double stick), mismatched length weapons (espada y daga, sword and dagger), empty hand, and long weapons, as time permits. Expect padded stick sparring at various contact levelsAndrew Somlyo, MI will be teaching how to train Latosa Escrima alone and with a partner, as well as how to structure and progress training for the individual and group training for populations from beginners to advanced at various experience and fitness levels and how to adapt and program that training during and after injury and at return to activityRecommended Gear

GM Cedric Concon
Cedric Concon is the head of the Latosa Escrima System, as designated by GMM Rene Latosa prior to his passing in 2022. GM Cedric is one of the oldest students of Latosa Escrima with five decades training, competing, and teaching, nationally and internationally. He holds national and world titles in various Filipino Martial Arts organization competitive rule sets and has competed under decades of different FMA rules. He is the leading authority on Latosa Escrima alive today
Andrew Somlyo, MD, MI
Andrew Somlyo is lead coach and a founder of Seattle Escrima Club. Training and teaching Latosa Escrima since 1995, and practicing martial arts seriously since 1989, Andrew has run training groups, clubs, and owned and operated schools since 1994. His childhood background includes folkstyle wrestling, foil fencing, and aikido, with later training in Okinawan Karate prior to his involvement in Chinese Martial Arts. He became involved in MMA with its birth in the US with the UFC and trained and competed in that format from its inception in the '90s, becoming involved with Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiujitsu, Catch Wrestling, and Sambo on moving to Los Angeles to train full time after residency in 2000. He has extensive experience working and teaching personal defense, competitive full contact fighters, club and personal security, military, and law enforcement, and extensive training through injury and disability, having had joint replacement for osteoarthritis in 2016 and 2024, consequences of some other portions of his background. He has been involved in Western Martial arts as a hobby since roughly 2003, moved to Seattle in 2008 and founded Seattle Escrima in 2009. He became involved with the Seattle Western Martial Arts group Lonin in 2010. His coaching and teaching interests include strength and conditioning with a background in olympic and power lifting, coaching and motor learning education, sport and combat psychology, and exercise in health and performance. He is a board certified internist and nephrologist who collects and studies antique Filipino weapons.
